In Memory of Davis Cosey

"Davis Cosey was truly one of a kind. He was one of my closest friends in animal advocacy. I will miss him dearly.”

We have lost a great man whose moral compass was no match for the average man. He always did the right thing. His strong convictions led many battles to making the lives of animals better.

Those who met him knew how dedicated he was to his family and to animals, especially to his beloved “Roxy” – a Jack Russell terrier. Davis’ passion for helping animals was never ending. His long list of achievements included opening the Friends of Perry Animal Shelter in Perry, Georgia, and supporting lobbying efforts to improve the welfare of animals.

He always donated his precious time to pursue animal friendly legislation such as animal-friendly license plates that support spay/neuter programs, microchip scanning law, dog fighting law, the dangerous dog law and the animal cruelty amendments (2014). One of the laws he was most proud of was prohibiting the use of carbon monoxide gas to euthanize dogs and cats in Georgia shelters.

Davis was cofounder of the Pet Coalition of Georgia and served on numerous charitable boards such as Fix Georgia Pets and the Georgia Department of Agriculture’s Executive and Legislative Committees. He regularly supported local humane societies and national animal organizations.

He supported the work we do at The Animal Protection Society, Inc. (TAPS) and offered scholarships to those who could not afford much needed training at our annual Animal Protection and Wellness (APAW) Expo. His legacy will continue, and the Davis Cosey Education Scholarship Program will continue to provide scholarships for those who wish to learn about animal protection, laws and wellness through our TAPS’ training.

Davis was the kindest and one of the most effective animal advocates I've ever worked with. Every time I think I am burned out with the work I do, I think about Davis' life and plan to live by his example. He was a calm ‘powerhouse’ and a true friend to animals. I send my deepest condolences to all who loved and knew him, particularly his wife, Diane.

We will miss you Davis and we will continue to honor your work and dreams. If only we had more time...
